At InnovaDeluxe, we have supported many online stores throughout their growth process, and one of the questions we hear most often when discussing qualified traffic acquisition is: how can I get other people to sell for me? The most efficient, scalable answer with the best return on investment has a clear name: affiliate marketing.
A well-designed affiliate program turns bloggers, content creators, price comparison sites, and even your own satisfied customers into an external sales network that only gets paid when it generates results. In essence, it is performance-based advertising. And from a business perspective, that is extraordinarily efficient.

What exactly is an affiliate program and how does it work
The mechanism is simple: a person or company, the affiliate, promotes our products through a unique and trackable link. When someone clicks on that link and completes a purchase, the affiliate receives a previously agreed commission.
That unique link is the core of the system. It contains tracking parameters that allow us to identify which affiliate generated the sale, when it happened, and from which channel. The underlying technology can be an external platform, a module integrated into our store, or an affiliate network solution.
Why it makes sense for an online store
When we analyze the cost structure of an ecommerce business, marketing is usually one of the most volatile and hardest-to-justify expenses. Google Ads or Meta Ads campaigns require ongoing investment regardless of results. SEO takes time to deliver. Email marketing depends on having a solid database.
An affiliate program breaks that logic. Costs only exist when revenue is generated. In addition, it allows us to reach audiences that would otherwise be difficult to access, because affiliates have already built trust with their followers. A recommendation from a specialized blogger is far more valuable than any banner.
Other benefits we commonly observe in our projects:
- Natural backlink generation that strengthens the store’s SEO.
- Increased brand awareness in highly specific niches.
- Diversification of traffic sources, reducing dependency on a single channel.
- Scalability: the more active affiliates you have, the greater the reach without proportionally increasing fixed costs.
Steps to create an affiliate program from scratch

Let’s get practical, where we can add the most value based on our experience.
First: Define the commission structure.
This is the most important decision and the one that most determines the program’s success. You need to calculate what percentage or fixed amount you can offer while maintaining sufficient margin. In ecommerce, commissions typically range between 5% and 20% of the net sale, although this varies widely depending on the sector and average order value. High-margin products can support more generous commissions; low-margin products require more precise calculations.
You also need to decide the cookie duration, meaning how many days after the first click you continue attributing the sale to the affiliate. Thirty days is the most common standard, although some programs use ninety-day windows for more considered purchase categories.
Second: Choose the right technology
You have three main options. The first is to join an established affiliate network such as Awin, Tradedoubler, or Admitad. These platforms already have registered affiliates and provide immediate visibility, but they charge fees on commissions and require a certain minimum volume to be cost-effective. The second option is to use a dedicated module within your platform: both PrestaShop and Shopify offer native and third-party solutions that allow you to manage the program directly from the admin panel. The third option is a hybrid or custom solution for stores with specific needs.
At InnovaDeluxe, we work with integrated modules in PrestaShop and Shopify because they provide full control over the program without giving up part of the commission to intermediaries.
Third: Recruit the right affiliates
An affiliate program without active affiliates is useless. Initial recruitment requires effort: identifying bloggers, YouTubers, Instagram creators, and content creators within your niche, reaching out to them personally, and offering attractive terms. It’s not about quantity, but quality. An affiliate with ten thousand highly targeted followers can generate more sales than one with a million generic followers.
It is also highly recommended to create a dedicated landing page for the program, visible on your store, where anyone interested can sign up and access creative assets: banners, product descriptions, and sales arguments.
Fourth: Provide materials and support
The best affiliates are those who have everything they need to work without friction. You should provide high-quality product images, optimized copy, comparisons, size charts—any resource that reduces their workload and increases their effectiveness. The easier you make it, the more active they will be.
Fifth: Monitor and continuously optimize
As with any marketing channel, data should guide decisions. Regularly review which affiliates generate the most sales, which landing pages convert best, and which product categories perform the strongest. With this information, you can incentivize top-performing affiliates, deactivate underperforming ones, and adjust commissions based on real performance.
Common mistakes we see in practice
Launching the program without prepared creative materials. Setting commissions without calculating real margins. Failing to establish clear terms and conditions that protect the store against unfair practices such as cookie stuffing or bidding on your brand in SEM campaigns. Neglecting regular communication with active affiliates. Expecting results in the first few weeks without having built the necessary network.
An affiliate program is not an immediate-impact solution. It is a medium- to long-term strategy that, once it reaches critical mass, becomes one of the most profitable and sustainable channels in ecommerce. Unlike paid advertising, the cost does not disappear when you stop investing: the affiliate network keeps working.
At InnovaDeluxe, we firmly believe that any store with a solid product and reasonable margins should include the creation of an affiliate program in its roadmap. The question is not whether it makes sense. The question is when the right time to start is. We know how to do it—request more information about our digital marketing services.
